It’s happening again… I’m justifying the consumption of excess food.
…yet, it’s a different experience than what I went through during the early days of my body transformation.
I’m sure you can relate to this on some level…
A few years ago, when I made the choice to refuse settling for mediocrity… the biggest obstacle I needed to overcome was the conversations in my head.
I’d eat really well for a few days, then slip up. When this happened I would justify it in my mind by saying, “I’ll start again tomorrow.”
This personal conversation would quickly follow up with a greater indulgence in food… after all… I was ‘re-committing’ the next day… so why not let loose now?
I overcame that obstacle by taking control of the conversation… by having a response every time I found myself saying, “I’ll start tomorrow.”
Today, I find myself in the same situation.
My long-term goal is to gain 10lbs of lean muscle… but my most important goal in this moment is to get ripped.
I currently have a six pack… the lower abs are faintly there… they aren’t deeply cut, but they are visible.
Before I focus on building more muscle I want to make sure I get shredded. Once I get shredded I want to stay shredded while I build muscle.
Like before… I’ve been doing very well for a few days… then I find myself overeating.
When this happens I’ve been justifying it by saying, “This excess food is going toward building muscle… which is one of my BIG goals.”
…and it’s true. The slight overfeeding is helping me achieve my big goal.
…but it’s not helping me achieve my current… most important goal.
I also justify it by saying, “You look pretty damn good Scott. You’re lean, muscular, and have a six pack.”
The lesson in all of this…
It’s great to have a long-term goal, but you need to focus 100% of your attention on what matters most to you in this moment… your short-term goal… which is one of the stepping stones toward achieving your Big Picture outcome.
So now, I have developed a response for each time I begin to justify the consumption of unplanned foods.
For me… it’s only 28 days… just 28 days of ultra focus will allow me to achieve this short term goal.
…then I can move on.
…and that’s key. Too often we get stuck in the vicious cycle and get nowhere.
I know it’s not going to be the most enjoyable 28 days, due to calorie restriction… but it’s just 28 days… from there I get to go after the fun stuff.
I am certain I will achieve this goal during the next 28 days for two reasons…
1) I just made it public… which is a great form of accountability.
2) Urgency… I gave myself a short concrete deadline… and I’ve put some serious emotion behind it, because I want more than anything to move on and go after my Big Picture goal.
To achieve this goal I’ll be referring back to my tried and true Elite Physique system.
It works every time.
Having the plan in place takes all the guess work out of the picture for me… and it keeps things stress free, because it’s all laid out for me.
With my hectic lifestyle, anything I can do to simply things, will increase my chances of success.
I’d love to hear from you…
…Can you relate to this kind of self-talk?
Have you been justifying any deviation from your plan?
What will be your response the next time you find yourself in that situation?
Awareness… that’s what it’s all about.
Awareness of your thoughts and your response to them.
Heighten your level of awareness… and great things will take place.
