The list of health benefits associated with the consumption of a fish oil supplement is a mile long. It’s been a staple in my diet for quite some time, along with Krill Oil. There is also a good amount of research that has demonstrated the positive impact that fish oil supplementation can have on fat loss, with evidence pointing toward increased fat burning during exercise.
Fish oil has been shown to decrease cortisol levels (stress hormone). It’s safe to say that this will also have a positive indirect impact on your fat loss since stress reduces your ability to burn fat. In addition to reducing cortisol levels, fish oil has also been shown to reduce inflammation, which is also a bonus when it comes to fat loss as well as muscle building.
Recently, thanks to Will Brink and his team, I’ve been learning about the benefits that fish oil has on gaining muscle. Will Brink is my go to guy when it comes to sorting through the bogus supplements from the supplements that actually work, so when I read through the studies that were referenced on his website it really peaked my curiosity, especially since I’m in muscle building mode right now.
I take all research with a grain of salt, even when it comes from my most trusted resources. Before I can stand behind the supporting evidence I need to try it out for myself… and that’s exactly what I’m going to do for the next 8 weeks.
Recommended Dosage
The research that I reviewed used 4 grams of fish oil per day. That’s approximately 4 times the recommend dose that you see on many labels. But it’s not just the grams of fish oil that’s important. The studies were very specific about the levels of fatty acids EPA (1.86 grams) and DHA (1.5 grams) that are in the dosage.
In order to consume the recommended dosage of EPA and DHA you will need to use a concentrated fish oil. Regular fish oil supplements have much lower doses of EPA and DHA. It’s not easy to find a capsule that consists of the EXACT ratio in these studies, but you can come close.
A concentrated fish oil supplement that I use contains 400 grams EPA and 300 grams DHA. For the purpose of my self experiment, I’m taking 4 of these capsules per day, which puts me just below the dosage that they used in the study.
Initial Observations
I began this experiment 5 days ago and immediately I experienced an increase in strength with my lifts and my joints/connective tissue feels incredible. No aches and pains. My recovery appears quicker as well. Frankly, my body has never felt better.
So far so good. At the end of the 8 weeks if I can see a nice body recomposition in addition to feeling fantastic, I will be one happy camper.
