“Training is less science than art. Be the artist.” Those powerful words came from Shawn Phillips in a recent status update on his Facebook wall. Those words resonated with me deeply and I shared this comment…
“Hitting the LOVE button!!! Artists are ‘In the moment’, They allow their thoughts, vision, passion, and heart pour out onto the canvas. Their art is an extension and an expression of themselves. They take great pride in their work.”
Then my buddy Darin Steen chimed in with this to say, “Hey Scott, that is profound dude. That describes me better than anyone ever has before. thanks for putting it that way!”
This picture of Shawn is an image that has motivated and inspired me for years. When I first laid my wide open eyes on it I was caught in a trance. I was mesmerized. I was fascinated. I admired the image as a great work of art. A beautiful masterpiece. The last thing that I was thinking about was the science behind what it took for Shawn to carve out this incredible sculpture of a body.
Science can be a useful tool in helping you fine tune your approach to body sculpting, but it’s also the cause for the great mass confusion that stops people dead in their tracks. They over analyze and over complicate the beauty of body transformation.
Science can take the joy out of training. Science can make you question your heart and passion. Science can rob you of your own personal creativity.
Science creates a competitive environment where one party is right and the other is wrong, therefore leading to more science where the latter party looks for studies to prove their point and prove the other party wrong. Science creates a “Me against You” atmosphere, when really, we should be embracing all forms of body sculpting and admiring each others achievements.
I have nothing to prove to you. I don’t have to be “Right” and make myself sound smarter or better than you. I don’t have to look to science to prove my case. What I see in the mirror, how I feel, how I live my life with pride, confidence, integrity, passion, and heart is all the proof that I need.
I’m fascinated, not just with my own physique, but the works of art that others have sculpted out of their body. It’s a thing of beauty, and when you catch a glimpse of someone who is totally in the zone, totally focused, totally “In the moment”, and experiencing a powerful mind-body connection, it’s poetry in motion.
It’s this, “Physique Artist” mindset, which I believe puts the joy into training. I believe it’s the key reason why us body sculptors not only maintain the results that we achieve from a body transformation, but continue to progress and improve upon our sculptures for a lifetime.
Science on the other hand can provide you with excuses and reasons why your current workout program is not working and why you should try this new age movement of training that was just proven to be a gazillion more times effective than all other training. Then when that doesn’t work, you begin to question yourself and whether or not there is something wrong with you if this ‘new’ fat torching system didn’t instantaneously combust the fat from your body.
Science is great when used for the greater good of all. I love science. It fascinates me. But nothing fascinates me more than art and using our body as the greatest canvas known to the human race.
Discover the beauty of your physique and sculpt your own personal masterpiece.
