Ideal Rate Of Weight Gain When Building Muscle Over 40

By Scott Tousignant on November 17, 2016

physique mastery podcast episode 12

The traditional methods of bulking and cutting are far from optimal
for aesthetic minded bros over 40 who have years of lifting under their belt.

In this episode of the Physique Mastery Podcast coaches Scott Tousignant and Bryan Krahn discus;

  • How lean you should get before entering a muscle building phase and why you should use caution when attempting to get super lean.
  • The increased importance of taking a slow and steady approach to building muscle over 40.
  • Why you should spend as little time in a deficit as possible.
  • Setting different goals other than scale weight.
  • Why progress doesn’t mean you need to continue gaining weight year after year.
  • The importance of sticking with a structured nutrition plan when going off a diet.
  • How we’re always learning through experience.

The Ebb and Flow Of High and Low Volume Training Phases

By Scott Tousignant on November 15, 2016

physique mastery podcast episode 11

Gradually increasing training volume over time is the most important factor for long term physique development. Trouble is, some bros make the mistake of constantly working out with high volume while failing to include low volume phases throughout the year.

The culprit often times is doubt. That inner voice questioning whether your muscles are getting enough stimulation to grow from the low volume work. Always thinking more is better.

I’ve certainly allowed these thoughts to enter my mind each time I’ve attempted a low volume workout phase. Bryan and I have also heard these thoughts and concerns echoed from several members within our Physique Mastery Movement group coaching experience community.

So when it came time to insert a low volume workout phase into our members training this month we knew it would be a great coaching opportunity. Helping grow more than just muscle in the Physique Mastery Movement community.

Biceps Bulging Sleeve Stretching Triset

By Scott Tousignant on November 11, 2016

biceps workout

If you want to build bigger biceps and love to experience a crazy ass sleeve stretching pump, (What bro doesn’t?) you’re going to really enjoy this biceps triset.

A1 Reverse Curls 4-6 reps
A2 Incline Dumbbell Biceps Curls 8-10 reps
A3 Spider Curls 12-15 reps

Rest for 90-120 seconds and repeat two more times.

Watch this video to see these exercises in action…

I typically perform Reverse Curls with light weight and high reps. This was a really nice change of pace for me. The heavy load and lower reps felt freak’n awesome!!!

Incline Dumbbell Biceps Curls are a staple in my training. I believe they are the best biceps building exercise out there when performed correct.

I see too many bros allowing their elbows to rise as they sling the weight up. They turn a biceps exercise into an anterior delt workout. Keep that upper arm locked in place and perpendicular to the floor. The entire movement takes place at the elbow joint… not the shoulder joint.

If you want to get a little more out of this movement you can begin with a neutral grip and supinate the wrists at the top.

Spider Curls are a little foreign to me. Frankly, I can’t remember the last time I’ve performed them. It’s a unique ‘feel’. It almost seems like you aren’t working through a full range of motion as it’s very challenging at the top. The contraction is crazy intense!

I experimented with the flat side of preacher curl bench, but found I didn’t get as much out of the exercise as I did on the incline bench. Using the lowest notch on the adjustable bench also felt great and could be better suited for shorter lifters. If you have a chest supported bench (shown in video above), it’s definitely the most comfortable.

What You Can Learn From Arnold Schwarzenegger and Pumping Iron – It’s Not What You Think

By Scott Tousignant on November 10, 2016

physique mastery podcast episode 10

Pumping Iron was a catalyst that sparked the bodybuilding movement. Decades later this cult classic continues to inspire physique athletes while stirring up feelings of unity, belonging, and a sense of normalcy in a world where many view us as freaks.

In this episode of the Physique Mastery Podcast coaches Scott Tousignant and Bryan Krahn share the impact that Arnold Schwarzenegger and the film Pumping Iron has had on their life and training.

Maybe it’s because of our experience under the bar and greater appreciation for the art of body sculpting, but even after having watched the film dozens of times, we still manage to takeaway priceless insights from Arnold and the Pumping Iron crew to this day.

Stop Being So Rigid With Your Workout Plan

By Scott Tousignant on November 4, 2016

physique mastery podcast episode 9

A strategically structured workout plan will enhance your life, bring joy to the transformation process, and set you up for success.

In this episode of the Physique Mastery Podcast coaches Scott Tousignant and Bryan Krahn discus the importance of following a workout program that suits your lifestyle with built in adaptability based on life circumstances.

Compliance with your designed workout plan is key. But there are times when life presents challenges that force you to call an audible and make temporary adjustments to the plan.

There are also times when life presents you with opportunities to step up your game. It’s just as important to take advantage of these moments.

How you handle these challenges and opportunities will have a big impact on your physique development and life.

This is a very important topic that isn’t discussed nearly enough. It’s something that we have been addressing in the Physique Mastery Movement this past month.

Some physique athletes feel like they fall behind when they are only able to complete 4 of their 5 planned workouts for the week. This creates a sense of defeat. Whereas a program with built in flexibility creates feelings of accomplishment and success.

Improve Your Gut Health and Boost Your Immune System By Adding Kefir To Your Diet

By Scott Tousignant on October 28, 2016

improve your gut health with kefir

If you’ve been following my vlogs for the past few months you have likely noticed that I’ve been adding kefir to my post-workout shakes, oatmeal, and just recently protein pancakes.

You may have been wondering what the heck kefir is and why is Scott consuming it every day?

The #1 reason is digestive health, which is a rapidly growing area of study that has really caught the attention of many physique coaches.

For the past couple years I’ve been hearing some of my trusted colleagues using the phrase,

“You are what you absorb”

What they mean by this is that just because you consume 150 grams of protein doesn’t mean that your body is absorbing all of it.

This really piqued my interest. Could it be possible that I’m not absorbing all the nutrients and vitamins from the foods I’m eating. Could this be holding back my gains and robbing my body of valuable energy? View Full Post… Click Here!
