We started a new training phase this week… Phase 9 from the Aesthetic Muscle Plan.
The beginning of the week focused on strength training… now we’re finishing off the week with a hypertrophy focus while utilizing unilateral exercises.

A1 Unilateral Dumbbell Chest Press
A2 Unilateral Incline Hammer Strength Chest Press
A3 Cable Chest Press
B1 Single Arm Cable Lateral Raises
B2 Single Arm Rear Delt Cable Fly’s
B3 Single Arm Upright Rows
C1 Single Arm Overhead Cable Triceps Extension
C2 Single Arm Cable Triceps Kickback
C3 Close Grip Push Ups on Medicine Ball
The main reason we’ve included unilateral movements into our physique training this month is simply to add variety while enhancing our mind-muscle connection.
But, I have to admit… a part of me is doing it just to show I’m not a complete meathead… oh who am I kidding? I’m 100% MEATHEAD and proud of it 😉
Seriously though… every once in a while it’s nice to take a step back in order to move forward.
Performing unilateral exercises typically requires you to lift a weight that is lighter than what you would normally lift. Therefore the target muscle doesn’t quite get the mechanical tension and stimulus required to grow.
…and I’m cool with that for this month. It’s a sort of deloading phase… which my body could use right now… allowing me to fire on all cylinders next month when I enter phase 10 of the Aesthetic Muscle Plan.
It did feel pretty freak’n awesome to experiences my abs, obliques, transverse abdominals, and glutes engage while performing many of the movements in today’s workout. It was different… and I enjoyed it.
Frankly, I’d much rather do focused abs and core work on it’s own… and lift heavier weight during my workouts… but this was a welcome change.
I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s Back and Biceps workout as well as Friday’s Leg Workout… both utilizing unilateral movements.
