Intraset Stretching For Stubborn Calves

I’m on a mission to grow my stubborn calves. One of the training protocol I will be including in my calves workouts is called Intraset Stretching, aka Intermittent Stretch Overload.

A study conducted at the University of Tampa, led by Jacob Rauch and Jeremy Silva, found that the group who performed Intraset Stretching on the Seated Calve Press doubled the muscle gains of the group who didn’t use the Intermittent Stretch Overload protocol.

Silva, J.E., Rauch, J., Lowery, R.P.,…..and Wilson, J.M. (2014) Weighted Post-Set Stretching Increases Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophy. National Strength and Conditioning Conference, Las Vegas Nevada.

In this study they did 5 sets of calves on the Leg Press machine. One group rested (the blue group ) and one group did weighted 30 sec stretching between sets (the yellow group ).

They began with a weight that they could lift for 12-15 reps. One group rested for 30 seconds while the other group held the stretch for 30 seconds. Then they repeated the process 4 more times, reducing the weight by 15% after each stretch.

This was my first attempt at the Intraset Stretching protocol. I used a Horizontal Leg Press machine, only did 4 sets, went too light, and made drops in weight that were too big… about Intraset Stretching For Stubborn Calves: Double The Muscle Gains

There’s been an explosion in online fitness coaching lately, all thanks to Instagram and YouTube. I have mixed emotions about this boom. I find it both scary and exciting. The scary part is that the only qualifications most of these online coaches have is a set of six pack abs. Many of whom are just teenage bros with very little experience lifting, let alone coaching experience.

Today I clicked on a bro’s profile after he liked and commented on one of my Instagram photos. In his profile I see that he’s a teenager and he’s in pretty darn good shape with ripped abs. Then I see that he’s an online fitness coach. He describes himself as, “A Fitness and Nutrition Master who has been working out for around 2 years”.

I damn near choked on my vomit. 2 years of working out and you’ve mastered it??? WTF!!! I’ve been working out for 25 years, been coaching clients for 15 years, prepped for multiple photo shoots, and competed in bodybuilding contests. I still wouldn’t refer to myself as a ‘master’ of fitness and nutrition. I’m still learning each and every day. Staying up to date with the latest Natural Bodybuilding research. Consulting with my fellow bros and coaches. Experimenting with different Physique Training protocols on myself and my clients. Gathering evidence through science and in the trenches experience.

Being a teenage bro with abs does not qualify you to coach others. Shit, I was eating a tub of ice cream, fast food, and guzzling beer in my late teens and I still sported a six pack. I thought that the secret to massive gainz was eating more peanut butter and drinking Mega Mass 2000 shakes a few times each day. Can You Change The Shape Of A Muscle Or Is It Genetic?

Can you change the shape of a muscle? This has been a topic of heated debate across social media lately. On one hand you have the group who says it’s broscience to think you can change the shape of a muscle. They believe that your muscles grow uniformly. That the shape always stays the same and it just grows bigger. I’ve seen guys standing next to their dad flexing their guns, and because their arms are similar in shape they state, “See, the shape of your arms is solely predetermined by genetics.” Now if that’s not broscience I don’t know what is.

Interesting enough, it’s the evidence based group who believes it’s possible to change the shape of your muscle. Among those leading the charge are Jose Antonio, Brad Schoenfeld, and Bret Contreras. I’m forever grateful for their continuous efforts toward merging in-the-trenches experiences with cutting edge physique training research.
